The MDC Crown and Bridge Fitting Process

Two short 3 and 2 day visits, or a single 5 -7 day visit to our Budapest clinic.

Session one sees our dentist evaluate your oral health and take X-rays. Teeth to be crowned and supporting teeth in the case of a bridge are trimmed and recontoured by removing enough enamel to allow room for a crown to be slotted snuggly over them. Colour matching confirms an accurate porcelain. Impressions are taken and if necessary a temporary bridge or crown may be adhered to protect the prepared teeth until the next visit.

Between the two visits and using the dental impression, a base is carved out of porcelain or metal (depending on the type of work). This base is then veneered with layers of porcelain to create a completely accurate tooth shape and colour. The tooth is then kiln fired. The firing process fuses the porcelain to its base.

On the second visit any temporary bridge or crown is removed. The colour and fit of the new, permanent crown or bridge is double checked and if all is well then it is fixed using dental glue. Note: it’s absolutely vital that you and your dentist are in complete agreement that the crown or bridge are good to go before being set in place.

Remember, it’s important to continue to follow best oral hygiene practices. Teeth should be brushed a minimum of twice a day with particular attention paid to the  crown area where the gum meets the tooth.

Because bridges are cemented in place, it’s impossible to remove them for cleaning. An ordinary toothbrush simple won’t do a good enough job so make sure you ask your dentist for guidance on how best to use a special dental floss under your bridge. Clean daily.

The Anatomy of Crowns and Bridges

So what are crowns and bridges actually made of? How are they made?

All crowns and bridges are made of porcelain. Porcelain fused to metal or gold depending on the requirement. Procera® is our metal free crown and bridge material.

Of course it’s important that whether Porcelain-fused-to-metal or Procera®  that the colour of your dental crown or bridge is consistent with your other teeth. The last thing you want is to draw unnecessary attention with a mis-matched crown.

Though porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer natural looking finishes and hues there are times when the metal beneath can start to show through. As gums recede it is sometimes possible to see a faint dark line at the gum line. That being the case the porcelain-fused-to-metal option is best for back teeth and right at the front too if your dentist is able to apply shoulder porcelain to conceal the line.

The best aesthetic option, but unfortunately not as strong, are all-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns and bridges which provide a better natural colour match than the metal fused ones. They also tend to wear down opposing teeth more than metal crowns. That said, they do make a sensible choice for front teeth

Achieving The Best Crown or Bridge Fit

We use two systems.

The Procera System®.

Incredibly strong, non-porous and made of bio-compatible material Procera® can be used for prosthetic reconstructions anywhere in the mouth. CAD/CAM technology delivers super strong optimal fits while its ability to transmit light delivers a translucent coping simulates the natural beauty of natural teeth.

E.max

E.max pressed ceramic crowns use multiple super thin layers of processed ceramic to create a crown or bridge many times stronger than Procera®. Chip and crack resistant. Which means they will look better for longer. More than that their high translucency, true-to-nature shade behaviour means they look even more natural. With a life expectancy several times that of Procera System® crowns and bridges E.max is perfect for mainly for single crowns at the back and front of the mouth. E.max is also ideal to be fitted on implants.
